The Market Team!
Gabrielle Barlow
Market Manager
Hey there! My name is Gabby!
Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much time has passed since my family and I first set up our booth at Bayview Farmers Market in 2005, when I was just five years old. Our initial offerings of espresso drinks soon blossomed into a diverse array of handmade potholders, cat toys, dog treats, fresh flowers from our farm, and wild-harvested mushrooms. Some of you may even remember that in our earlier years, my sister and I used to busk at the market, heading out first thing after the bell rang every Saturday morning to play our violins.
As we grew up, we shifted our efforts to focus on mead-making, and now, 20 years later, Strix Varia Meadery is our sole venture at the market, we also sell kegs at a handful of local taprooms.
Outside of the market, I work full-time as a certified veterinary assistant at Useless Bay Animal Clinic, fulfilling my lifelong passion for caring for animals. I earned my associate degree and Veterinary Assistant Certification from Cedar Valley College in 2020, with plans to continue my education and obtain my Technician License down the road.
When I’m not at the clinic or market, you might find me hiking and foraging for wild mushrooms, fishing or crabbing, paddleboarding, working on and restoring cars, playing my violin, hanging out in the garden, or spending time with all our animals at home. I am also an avid photographer—wildlife and nature were the start of my obsession, which eventually led to the opening of my first small business. I now own Lasting Impressions Events & Photography, through which I photograph weddings, maternity shoots, engagements, family sessions, senior photos, pets, and more!
But above all, I am profoundly grateful for my family—my parents, Jeff and Erica Barlow; my sister, Livy; my soon-to-be brother-in-law, Dylan; my boyfriend, Janoah; and his parents, Todd and Teresa Spratt. Their unwavering love and support have been my guiding light, and I feel incredibly blessed to have them cheering me on every step of the way.
Bayview Farmers Market is more than just a place to sell goods—it’s a community that has shaped me in countless ways. The friendships, lessons, and experiences I’ve gained here are invaluable. Now, stepping into the role of market manager, it feels like I’ve come full circle. I am excited to give back to the market that has given me so much and look forward to helping it continue to thrive for years to come!
Maycn Scherger
Market Assistant
Hey there! My name is Maycn!
I’ve been a Whidbey resident my whole life and started coming to the Bayview Market as a kid. In 2020, I decided to open my microgreen and hydroponic business to continue dedicating myself to the power of cultivating a healthy community through agricultural education. I currently offer over 40 different microgreens grown using a soilless method and 24 hydroponic vegetables. I’m also working to expand my hydroponics on a larger scale using environmentally sound techniques.
I also own a business originally started by my father when he was in college—Pheasant Creek Smokehouse—which you may have seen at the market or the Whidbey Fair. The story goes: When I was a baby, my parents made the jump to build, by hand, and open Pheasant Creek Golf Course in Touchet, WA. We hosted many golf tournaments and quickly became pillars of the community. Eventually, we decided to host dinners for golfers, course workers, farmers, and anyone who wanted to come. This gave my family the opportunity to start smoking food on a large scale—and the rest was history. We sold the golf course when I was 12 so I could continue traveling the country and playing semi-professional beach volleyball, for which I’m extremely thankful.
I am proud to continue my father’s legacy in both golf and cooking.
I’m currently a student at the University of Idaho, majoring in journalism and mass media with a double minor in urban agriculture and political science. UOI is where my love for urban agriculture expanded tremendously. Before I knew it, I was spending my time in multiple labs and fields, researching, experimenting, and even eating what some would call suspicious vegetables. I’m also the creator of The Athlete Showcase, where I film, edit, and interview student-athletes to help the community get to know them better.
Outside of the market, you can find me working at Callahan’s Firehouse in Langley, spending time on the beach with my Doberman, Kosca, making jewelry, or cooking fun and inventive meals. I also love spending time in my own garden, where I experiment with loads of edible plants. I’m an avid sports fan—hockey, rugby, golf, you name it, I’ll definitely watch it!
To say I’m excited to be one of the assistant market managers is an understatement! Much like other patrons, I would come to the market for various weekly essentials—fruits and veggies, my chocolate treats, etc. I’m beyond ready to see everyone for the upcoming market season!
Gabriel Jacobson-Ross
Market Assistant
I’ve been part of the Bayview Farmers Market community since 2001, when I was five years old I started helping my family with Blackberry Moon Farm. Today, we offer a variety of fresh fruit, including berries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and apples, along with fresh, aged cheeses and my family’s handcrafted line of soaps, scrubs, oils, candles, and more.
In 2017, I started my career as a commercial fisherman, first tuna fishing off the Washington coast in Westport, and later traveling even farther to work in Alaska’s salmon fisheries in Bristol Bay for sockeye salmon.
Outside of work, I’m always looking for my next adventure. I love golfing, snowboarding, rockhounding, exploring the coastline and mountains in search of garnets, agates, and gold. Another longtime passion of mine is foraging for wild mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest, where I enjoy hunting for chanterelles, morels, and porcini.
Now I am bringing my focus back home to my family’s ever-growing business ranging from sourcing ingredients and supplies to hands-on production, customer service, and advertising. Engaging with the public and being a part of our customers’ experience has given me a deep appreciation for the work that goes into running a small business.
Whether I’m working on the farm, out at sea, or exploring the outdoors, I thrive on community and adventure. From my early days at the Bayview Farmers Market to where I am now, I’m grateful for the experiences that have shaped me and excited for what’s ahead!
